Chapter I PRELIMINARY

Short title, extent and commencement.

1. (1) This Act may be called the South Gujarat University Act, 1965.
2. (2) It extends to the area comprising the districts of Surat, Bulsar, Dangs, Bharuch and such part of the Baroda District as the State Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify in this behalf.
3. (3) This section shall come into force at once and the remaining provisions of this Act shall come into force on such date as the State Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.

Definitions. In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires,—

1. (1) "Affiliated College" means a college affiliated to the University;
2. (2) "Approved Institution" means an institution approved by the University;
3. (3) "College" means a degree college or an intermediate college;
4. (4) "Degree college" means an affiliated college which is authorised to submit its students to an examination qualifying for any degree of the University;
5. (5) "Head Master" means the head of a High School;
6. (6) "High School" means a high school which has been recognised as a high school by the State Government or by an officer authorised by it on that behalf;
7. (7) "Hostel" means a place of residence for students of the University maintained or recognised by the University, either as a part of or separate from a college;
8. (8) "Principal" means the head of a college;
9. (9) "Recognised Institution" means an institution for research or specialised studies other than a college and recognised as such by the University;
10. (10) "Registered Graduate" means a graduate registered under the provisions of this Act;
11. (11) "Secondary Teachers" means such class of teachers imparting instruction in secondary schools as may be declared to be secondary teachers by the State Government;
12. (12) "Teachers" means professors, readers, lecturers and such other persons imparting instruction in the University or in any college or institution in accordance with the regulations;
13. (13) "University" means the South Gujarat University constituted under this Act;
14. (14) "University Area" means the area specified in sub-section
15. (2) of section 1.
