The Mizoram (Village Councils) Act, 2025

General202538 sections8 chapters

The Mizoram (Village Councils) Act, 2025, establishes a comprehensive framework for local self-governance in rural Mizoram. It mandates the creation of Village Councils to manage local development, settle minor disputes, and oversee community assets. The Act defines the composition of these councils based on population, ensures women's representation, and empowers them to collect taxes and user charges. It also introduces the concept of "Hnatlang" (community service) and mandates social audits to ensure transparency. By decentralizing administrative powers, the Act aims to foster grassroots democracy, improve rural infrastructure, and ensure that village-level decisions reflect the needs of the local population.
