Powers and duties of the University

("Powers and duties of the University")

The University shall have the following powers and duties, namely:—

1. (a) to provide for research and instruction in such branches of learning as the University may deem fit to take such steps as it considers necessary for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge;
2. (b) to hold examinations and to grant degrees, diplomas and other academic distinctions or titles to persons as may be laid down in the Statutes, Ordinances or Regulations;
3. (c) to confer honorary degrees or other distinctions, on approved persons in the manner laid down in the Statutes;
4. (d) to institute prizes, medals, research studentships, exhibitions and tournaments;
5. (e) to receive endowments, donations, or subsidies from the Government or any other person;
6. (f) to institute and to sue;
7. (g) to appoint teachers and such other officers as in the opinion of the University may be necessary;
8. (h) to control and maintain teaching and to determine the teaching requirements of the University;
   • (i) to institute and manage halls, hostels and other places of residence and discipline for the students of the University;
9. (j) to manage and control the laboratories, libraries, museums and reading rooms;
10. (k) to determine the standards of education and research in the University;
11. (l) to maintain a University extension programme;
12. (m) to demand and receive such fees and other charges as may be prescribed by the Ordinances;
13. (n) to organize and carry on physical education, sports and other extra-curricular activities;
14. (o) to establish, maintain or recognize colleges and regional centres;
15. (p) to make such arrangements as may be required for the education of women students; and
16. (q) to do all such other acts and things, whether incidental to the powers aforesaid or not, as may be necessary or desirable to further the objects of the University.
