The Tamil Nadu Public Men (Criminal Misconduct) Repeal Act, 1977
The Tamil Nadu Public Men (Criminal Misconduct) Repeal Act, 1977 officially cancels a 1973 state law that was created to investigate criminal misconduct by public officials in Tamil Nadu. Upon its passage, the Act immediately stopped all pending complaints, investigations, and legal proceedings initiated under the previous law, while also dissolving appointments made under it. Importantly, the repeal does not grant public figures immunity from wrongdoing. Instead, it ensures that public servants can still be investigated and prosecuted under other existing general laws. This Act mattered because it removed a specific local legal mechanism while keeping standard anti-corruption laws active.
