Bare Act
The Tamil Nadu Nambudri Act, 1932
The Tamil Nadu Nambudri Act, 1932 regulates joint family property, succession, marriage, and guardianship for Nambudri Brahmans in Tamil Nadu not governed by Marumakkattayam law. It establishes that every family member, male or female, holds equal proprietary rights in joint family assets. The legislation curtails traditional patriarchal control by requiring majority consent for major property transactions and allowing individual members to demand a per capita partition of family property. Additionally, it guarantees women funding for marriage expenses, defines legal guardianship, and sets clear rules for the inheritance of separate property. This law transformed traditional social practices into codified individual rights.
