Bare Act
The Punjab Sugarcane (Regulation of Purchase and Supply) Act, 1953
This legislation regulates the supply, purchase, and distribution of sugarcane for sugar factories across the State of Punjab. It applies to sugar factory occupiers, licensed purchasing agents, local sugarcane growers, and growers cooperative societies. The Act establishes a Sugarcane Control Board and appoints a Cane Commissioner to oversee assigned supply areas, evaluate factory supply needs, prohibit unsuitable crop varieties, and enforce licensed purchasing procedures. It also empowers the state government to levy a tax on sugarcane purchases to raise revenue while offering tax refunds on sugar exported internationally. This framework ensures equitable trade, structured agricultural operations, and steady raw material supply for the sugar manufacturing industry.
