The Puducherry Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1968
The Puducherry Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1968 prohibits the slaughter of cows, heifers, and calves throughout the Union Territory of Puducherry. It applies to all residents, commercial slaughterhouses, and livestock traders within the territory. Under the law, bulls and bullocks can only be slaughtered if a competent authority certifies that they are over fifteen years old or permanently unfit for breeding, draught, or agriculture. Exceptions exist for animals suffering from notified infectious diseases or those used in medical research. Additionally, the Act bans the sale and transport of beef, establishes care institutions for unproductive cows, and imposes criminal penalties including imprisonment for violations.
