The Madhya Pradesh Agricultural Cattle Preservation Act, 1959, is a state-level law designed to protect and preserve agricultural cattle, including cows, bulls, bullocks, and buffaloes. It strictly regulates the slaughter, transport, and sale of these animals within the state. To slaughter such cattle, one must obtain a formal certificate from a Competent Authority, which is only granted if a Veterinary Officer certifies the animal is over 15 years old or permanently incapacitated. The Act also prohibits the unauthorized transport and export of cattle for slaughter and restricts the possession of meat from illegally slaughtered animals. Violations are treated as serious, cognizable criminal offences.
