The Gujarat Municipalities (Extension of Term) Act, 1962
1. Short title and extent.
(1) This Act may be called the Gujarat Municipalities (Extension of Term) Act, 1962. (2) It extends to the whole of the State of Gujarat.
2. Definitions.
In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires,— (a) "municipality" means a municipality constituted or deemed to be constituted under any relevant municipal law; (b) "relevant municipal law" means— (i) the Bombay District Municipal Act, 1901, as in force in the Bombay area of the State of Gujarat; (ii) the Bombay Municipal Boroughs Act, 1925, as in force in the Bombay area of the State of Gujarat; (iii) the Bombay Provincial Municipal Corporations Act, 1949, as in force in the Bombay area of the State of Gujarat; (iv) the Madhya Pradesh Municipalities Act, 1922, as in force in the Vidarbha region of the State of Bombay as transferred to the State of Gujarat; (v) the Saurashtra District Municipal Act, 1956; (vi) the Saurashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1956; or (vii) the Hyderabad District Municipalities Act, 1956, as in force in the Marathwada region of the State of Bombay as transferred to the State of Gujarat.
3. Extension of term of office of councillors.
Notwithstanding anything contained in any relevant municipal law or in any notification, order or bye-law made thereunder, the term of office of the councillors of the municipalities specified in the Schedule shall be extended up to and inclusive of the 31st day of March, 1963, and accordingly, the term of office of such councillors which would, but for the provisions of this Act, have expired before the said date shall be deemed to be extended up to that date.
