Bare Act
The Tamil Nadu State Carriages and Contract Carriages (Acquisition) Act, 1973
This Act was enacted by the Tamil Nadu government to nationalize private stage and contract carriage services. It allows the state to acquire these vehicles, along with their permits, infrastructure, and records, to ensure public control over transport services in line with constitutional directives. The Act establishes a legal framework for determining fair compensation for the acquired assets, managing the transfer of employees to state-run transport entities, and resolving disputes through appointed arbitrators. For the ordinary citizen, this law marked the transition from private to state-operated public transport, ensuring that the government holds the exclusive privilege to operate these services.
