Bare Act
The Tamil Nadu Agriculturists Relief (Amendment) Act, 1972
The Tamil Nadu Agriculturists Relief (Amendment) Act, 1972 provides financial relief to farmers across Tamil Nadu by updating existing debt relief legislation. It regulates outstanding agricultural debts, caps interest rates on loans, and provides mechanisms to scale down debt liabilities or declare long-standing debts fully discharged. The Act applies to individual farmers, tenants, and joint families holding agricultural land, while excluding wealthier individuals assessed for income tax or substantial property taxes, as well as debts owed to banks, government bodies, and cooperative societies. This law matters because it prevents severe rural indebtedness, protects agrarian livelihoods, and safeguards vulnerable farmers from losing their land through forced judicial sales or predatory lending practices.
