TALmAl7I RIGHTS ACT, 1953
The Punjab Abolition of Ala Malikiyat and Talukdari Rights Act, 1952
General195213 sections
This law formally abolishes the rights of superior landlords, known as Ala Maliks, and vests full ownership in their tenants, the Adna Maliks, across Punjab. By ending the previous feudal system, the government ensures that inferior owners gain complete control over their land without existing obligations. To compensate the superior owners, the Act mandates payments equal to eight times the annual rent they previously collected. The state administers these payments to smoothly transition land rights from the old hierarchy directly to the people who actually cultivate the soil.
