(1) A person appointed to any post in a municipal service shall remain on probation for a period of two years: Provided that,— (a) any period, after such appointment, spent on deputation shall count towards the period of probation; (b) any period of officiating appointment shall be reckoned as the period of probation. A person who has once been appointed to a post on probation, shall, on completion of the period of probation, be entitled to be confirmed in the post unless he is otherwise informed in writing. (2) If in the opinion of the Appointing Authority, the work or conduct of a person appointed to any post during the period of probation is not satisfactory, he may,— (a) if such person is appointed by direct recruitment, dispense with his service; (b) if such person is appointed by promotion— (i) revert him to his former post; (ii) deal with him in such other manner as the terms and conditions of his previous appointment permit; or (iii) extend his period of probation by such period as he may think fit and thereafter if it could not be satisfactory even on expiry of the extended period of probation, he shall be free from any such claim. (3) On completion of the period of probation of a person, the Appointing Authority shall in his opinion, (i) confirm him in the appointment from the date of his appointment, if he is appointed against a permanent vacancy; (ii) confirm him in the appointment from the date of the vacancy, if he is appointed against a temporary vacancy; or (iii) declare that he has not completed his period of probation satisfactorily and he shall not be eligible to be confirmed. (4) The Government may direct that any person appointed to any post in the municipal service, as the case may be, shall undergo training for such period and the details of such training shall be as prescribed and on failure to complete it within a specified period, he shall be liable to be discharged.
