Bare Act
The Nagaland Village Area and Area Councils Act, 1979
The Nagaland Village and Area Councils Act, 1978 establishes and regulates local self-governance institutions across the state of Nagaland. It formally recognises traditional village administration systems alongside structured Village Councils and Area Councils. The Act applies to all residents, customary village authorities, traditional chiefs, and local bodies throughout Nagaland. It empowers Village Councils to maintain law and order, settle local disputes using customary tribal law, manage development projects, control land transfers, and access institutional credit. For the ordinary citizen, this law provides legal recognition to customary tribal governance while connecting traditional village authorities to state administration and economic development.
