This Act (with the rules made under it) provides for the official languages of Meghalaya. English is the official language of the State, and Khasi and Garo are associate official languages in the districts where they are spoken, including in the Autonomous Districts under the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution.
- 1. Short title and Commencement
- 2. Provided that the date or dates appointed by the State Government in respect of any parts of the State of Meghalaya shall not be later than five years from the date of the assent to this Act.

- 5. Provided, further, that all Inter-District Official communications shall continue to be in the English language.
