Bare Act
The Meghalaya Identification, Registration (Safety & Security) of Migrant Workers Act, 2020
This Act regulates the registration, safety, and security of migrant workers in the Indian state of Meghalaya. It applies to all local establishments and non-domiciled migrant laborers performing skilled, semi-skilled, or unskilled work. The law mandates that migrant workers register for temporary permits, holding employers responsible for compliance and safety. This legislation matters because it establishes an official state registry to monitor the workforce, requires police and employers to protect workers from harm, and strictly penalizes anyone who harasses or discriminates against migrants. Ultimately, it safeguards these vulnerable laborers by securing their safety and providing them with free legal assistance.
