STATEMENT OF OBJECTS AND REASONS
The Manipur Fisheries Act, 1988Though there are extensive fishery resources in Manipur, the production of fish is very low due to lack of proper management and development activities of these resources. Some of the species of fishes available in this State are also facing extinction from want of proper conservation of natural habits and habitats of the fishes. Over and above, fish plays an important role in the improvement of nutrition and forms an especially valuable addition to our diet. In order to takle this industry efficiently and economically, therefore, a sperate Fisheries Department was created in this State, its main function being to plan the development on sound scientific line under expert advice. Experience has, however, shown that much headway can't be made in the absence of any legislation for checking indiscriminate slaughter of fish in this State. The proposed Bill seeks to provide for the protection, conservation and development of the available fishery resources by taking immediate necessary steps. The production of fish in the State will also by increased manifolds by making appropiate managements.
Hence, this Bill.
