Bare Act
The Maharashtra Endowing Upon the Panchayats in the Scheduled Areas the Powers to Function as Self-Government (Amendment of Certain State Laws) Act, 1997
Infrastructure199715 sections
This Act serves as a legislative bridge to implement the central Panchayats (Extension to the Scheduled Areas) Act, 1996, within Maharashtra. It amends several state laws to grant significant autonomy to Gram Sabhas and Panchayats located in Scheduled Areas. By doing so, it ensures that tribal communities have a direct say in local governance, including the management of natural resources, land acquisition, and the regulation of money lending and intoxicants. For an ordinary citizen in these areas, this law is vital as it formalizes their right to participate in decision-making processes that directly impact their cultural identity, livelihoods, and community development.
