General195911 sections
The Jammu and Kashmir State Village and Town Patrol Act, 1959, empowers the District Magistrate to ensure public safety in areas where local security provisions are deemed insufficient. It mandates that adult male residents between 18 and 50 years of age participate in night patrol duties. The Act establishes a committee to manage the selection of patrol members and oversee operations. It allows for the use of substitutes and provides for penalties, including fines for individuals or the entire village, if patrol duties are neglected. Essentially, it creates a community-based security framework where citizens are legally obligated to assist in maintaining local order.
