Bare Act

The Jammu and Kashmir Prevention of Ribbon Development Act, 1950

General20078 sections

This law prevents developers from constructing buildings in long strips right alongside government-maintained roads without permission, effectively stopping uncontrolled, ribbon-like urban sprawl. It applies to anybody erecting structures near state-owned roads, bridges, or highways in the territory. The Act empowers the Chief Engineer to order mandatory demolition and removal of any unauthorized buildings to ensure public safety and preserve road margins. Crucially, owners who lose their structure due to these enforcement measures are not entitled to any financial compensation, and their disputes are resolved through a final appeal process managed by the Public Works Department Minister.
