Bare Act

The Jammu and Kashmir Majority Act, 1920

General19774 sections

This Act, enforced in Jammu and Kashmir from Baisakh 1978 (according to the local calendar), sets the age of adulthood for residents of the state for civil purposes. It amends or supplements existing laws by ensuring every person domiciled in the state reaches legal maturity at a specified age, thereby granting them full legal capacity (Section 1 and 3). However, it explicitly preserves the validity of religious customs regarding marriage, adoption, and dower, meaning a person’s right to participate in these specific acts remains based on their personal law. Crucially, it provides a “savings” clause stating that anyone who had already legally attained majority before this Act came into force retains that status and can continue to act in all matters without interruption (Section 2).
