Definitions

2. In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires, -

1. (a) "affiliated college" means a college affiliated under section 50;
2. (b) "approved institution" means an institution approved under section 52;
3. (c) "college" means a degree college or an affiliated college, teaching any of the courses leading to a certificate, diploma or a degree;
4. (d) "hostel" means a unit of residence for students maintained or recognised by the University under this Act;
5. (e) "pathashala" means pathashala recognised as such by the State Government and which is imparting education in Sanskrit leading to a certificate of Prathma, Madhyama granted and a degree of Shastri and Acharya conferred, by the State Examination Board, as the case may be;
6. (f) "prescribed" means prescribed by the regulations;
7. (g) "principal" means the head of a college;
8. (h) "recognised institution" means the institution of research or specialised study and recognised as such by the University under section 51;
   • (i) "regulations" means the regulations made under section 57;
9. (j) “Sanskrit” includes Prakrit, Magadhi, Ardhamagadhi and Pali;
10. (k) "teacher" means professor, reader, lecturer imparting instruction or guiding research in the University or a University college or an affiliated college or a recognised institution or an approved institution or such other persons as may be declared to be the teachers by the Regulations;
11. (l) "University " means the Shree Somnath Sanskrit University constituted under section 3;
12. (m) "University area" means the area of the whole of the State of Gujarat;
13. (n) "University college" means a college which the University may establish or maintain;
14. (o) "University Department" means any post-graduate or research institution or department maintained by the University.
