The Madhya Pradesh Agricultural Cattle Preservation Act, 1959
The Madhya Pradesh Agricultural Cattle Preservation Act, 1959 regulates the slaughter, transport, sale, and purchase of agricultural cattle across Madhya Pradesh. It applies to livestock owners, traders, slaughterhouses, and the general public within the state. The legislation completely bans the slaughter of cows and calves of cows or she-buffaloes. Other cattle, including bulls, bullocks, and adult buffaloes, may only be slaughtered if a competent authority certifies that the animal is over twenty years old, permanently unfit for work or breeding, and free from disease. By establishing strict penal provisions and transport prohibitions, the Act seeks to safeguard livestock essential to the agrarian economy.
