The Andhra Pradesh Occupants of Homesteads (Conferment of Ownership) Act, 1976
The Andhra Pradesh Occupants of Homesteads (Conferment of Ownership) Act, 1976
This law protects vulnerable rural workers in the state of Andhra Pradesh by securing their shelter. It applies to landless agriculturists, agricultural laborers, and village artisans occupying dwelling sites outside municipal areas. The Act prevents their eviction and grants them permanent ownership of their homesteads, up to five cents of land, after paying a nominal regulated price to the landowner. This ownership is heritable but cannot be sold. This legislation matters because it provides vital housing security and basic property rights to poor, marginalized rural families, shielding them from sudden eviction, poverty, and homelessness while ensuring their social and economic welfare.
