Bare Act
The Tripura Agricultural Indebtedness Relief Act, 1979
This legislation provides financial relief to vulnerable rural groups in Tripura, including marginal farmers, landless labourers, tribal jhumias, and rural artisans. It completely discharges non-institutional private debts incurred prior to its commencement, legally releasing debtors from repayment obligations. The law prohibits civil courts from hearing debt recovery suits against eligible individuals and mandates the return of pledged movable property and mortgaged land. Special tribunals are established to enforce these provisions, handle property restoration, and resolve disputes. By shielding impoverished agricultural communities from predatory private lending and debt bondage, the Act aims to secure their livelihoods and promote economic equity.
