The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006

This Act prohibits child marriage, meaning the marriage of a girl under 18 or a boy under 21. A child marriage is voidable at the option of the party who was a child, who can apply to court to annul it, and it is void in cases such as trafficking or force. The court can order maintenance and residence for the girl and custody and maintenance of children, who remain legitimate. Marrying a child, and performing, promoting or allowing a child marriage, is punishable with up to two years' imprisonment and a fine of up to one lakh rupees. Offences are cognizable and non-bailable, and Child Marriage Prohibition Officers work to prevent such marriages.
