This Act makes it a legal duty for children and relatives to maintain parents and senior citizens (people aged 60 or above) who cannot support themselves. A parent or senior citizen can apply to a Maintenance Tribunal, which can order a monthly allowance of up to ₹10,000, with appeals to an Appellate Tribunal. A gift or transfer of property made on condition of being cared for can be declared void if the condition is broken. Abandoning a senior citizen is an offence. The Act also asks State Governments to set up old age homes and provide medical care for senior citizens.
