This Act declares the Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, an institution of national importance and makes it an autonomous body. It sets out how the Institute is governed through its members, President and Governing Body, and how it is funded and audited. The Institute develops medical education and research at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and runs hospitals. It can award its own medical degrees and diplomas, which are recognised as medical qualifications. Staff of the old institute were transferred to it.
