THE FOOD SAFETY AND STANDARDS ACT, 2006
The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006
The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, coordinates food safety across India by regulating the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food products. It establishes the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India as a central regulator to set scientific standards and oversee licensing. The law applies to all commercial food business operators, from large manufacturers and importers to local restaurants and grocery stores, while explicitly exempting farmers. This legislation matters because it protects public health by preventing the distribution of unsafe, misbranded, or contaminated food, helping consumers trust what they eat and make informed and healthier food choices.
