The Coast Guard Act, 1978 establishes and regulates India’s Coast Guard as an armed force of the Union. It primarily applies to all Coast Guard officers, enrolled members, and passengers aboard their ships or aircraft. The Act details service conditions, defines service-related and civil offenses, and sets up dedicated Coast Guard Courts to enforce strict service discipline. This legislation is highly important because it empowers the force to actively ensure maritime security, protect artificial offshore installations, assist fishermen in distress at sea, prevent and control marine pollution, and combat smuggling, safeguarding India’s vital national interests and its maritime zones.
