The Electricity Act of 2003 regulates the generation, transmission, distribution, trading, and use of electrical energy across India. It applies to all commercial power generation companies, grid operators, electrical utilities, traders, and electricity consumers. This law matters because it consolidates national electricity policies, establishes strong, independent regulatory commissions to manage tariff determination processes, and promotes competition to protect consumer interests. By encouraging efficiency and environmental sustainability, the law aims to reform the power sector, introduce open grid access for supply flexibility, and mandate rural electrification so that reliable and affordable power is safely distributed to households and industries across India.
