THE TELANGANA BORSTAL SCHOOLS ACT, 1925
The Telangana Borstal Schools Act, 1925
The Telangana Borstal Schools Act, 1925, is a reformative piece of legislation designed to rehabilitate adolescent offenders rather than subjecting them to the harsh environment of adult prisons. It empowers courts to sentence young offenders to specialized Borstal schools for periods ranging from two to five years, focusing on education, discipline, and vocational training. The Act establishes a system of supervised release (licensing) and provides for oversight through Visiting Committees. Crucially, it ensures that a conviction under this Act does not carry the same social or legal disqualifications as a standard criminal conviction, aiming to reintegrate youth into society as productive citizens.
