The Madras Preservation of Private Forests (Amendment) Act, 1971

Environmental19716 sections

This Act amends the Kerala Preservation of Private Forests Act to regulate tree cutting more strictly. It defines a forest tree to exclude common species like rubber, cashew, and mango. The most significant change adds a new section requiring landowners to get permission from the District Collector before cutting trees on land previously covered by the Madras Act. This prevents unauthorized deforestation. The law also increases penalties for violations, allowing imprisonment for up to two years or fines up to five thousand rupees, ensuring better protection of forest resources in the state.
