Bare Act
The Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act
This law regulates working conditions for employees in commercial businesses, shops, restaurants, hotels, and entertainment venues across Tamil Nadu. It applies to formal and informal workers in these non-factory commercial enterprises, excluding managerial staff and government entities. The law safeguards workers by capping daily and weekly work hours, mandating rest periods and weekly holidays, ensuring paid annual and sick leave, and prohibiting child labor. It also strictly regulates wage payments, overtime rates, and wage deductions while providing protection against unjust dismissal. By standardizing health, safety, and fair employment standards, it prevents worker exploitation and offers legal remedies for workplace disputes.
