Bare Act
The Tamil Nadu Public Property (Prevention of Destruction and Loss) Act, 1982
This law deters vandalism and protects state-owned assets and public commuters in Tamil Nadu. It applies to anyone who intentionally damages, destroys, burns, or tampers with public property worth one hundred rupees or more, including roads, bridges, water supplies, state machinery, electricity infrastructure, and educational institutions. It also penalizes individuals who throw stones or dangerous materials at moving vehicles. Establishing strict penalties including mandatory minimum prison sentences, restricted bail, and financial compensation to repair damaged public assets, this statute matters because it safeguards vital infrastructure, ensures public travel safety, and holds offenders financially and criminally accountable for harming community resources.
