Bare Act
The Tamil Nadu Occupants of Kudiyiruppu (Protection from Eviction) Act, 1961
This Act provides security of tenure to agricultural labourers and agriculturists residing in dwelling sites or huts, known as kudiyiruppu, across the State of Tamil Nadu. It prohibits landowners from evicting qualifying occupants except under specified conditions, such as property destruction or willful denial of the owner's title. The law enables wrongfully evicted occupants to apply to authorized officers for restoration of possession under previous tenancy terms. By barring civil court jurisdiction and establishing administrative inquiry and appeal processes under District Collectors, the legislation safeguards vulnerable rural workers from arbitrary dispossession, protecting their basic living arrangements and housing stability.
