Bare Act
The Tamil Nadu Indebted Agriculturist (Temporary Relief) Act, 1976
The Tamil Nadu Indebted Agriculturists (Temporary Relief) Act, 1976 provides temporary financial relief to agricultural landholders, tenants, and lessees across Tamil Nadu. It places a temporary moratorium on legal proceedings, decree executions, and eviction suits related to debt recovery against eligible farmers for a period of two years and six months. Corporate entities, tax-paying individuals, government bodies, co-operative societies, and commercial banks are excluded from these debt relief benefits. By pausing debt litigation and regulating land transfers intended to defeat creditor claims, the law protects vulnerable farming households from immediate financial distress and forced dispossession during economic hardships.
