Bare Act
The Tamil Nadu Inam Estates (Abolition and Conversion into Ryotwari) Act, 1963
This legislation abolishes the traditional inam system, a historic land grant framework, across Tamil Nadu and converts these estates into a direct state-administered ryotwari tenure system. It applies to private landholders, agricultural tenants, and religious or charitable institutions holding rights within inam estates. Under this law, the state government takes control of all estate lands, forests, and natural resources, extinguishing the traditional landlord-tenant relationship. Cultivators and landholders who meet specific historical possession and farming criteria can obtain direct land ownership titles, known as ryotwari pattas, while affected landholders receive statutory compensation through dedicated tribunals.
