Bare Act
The Sikkim Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 2017
The Sikkim Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 2017 bans the slaughter of cows, including milking, dry, heifer, and unproductive cows, throughout the state of Sikkim. It applies to all individuals within Sikkim, making unauthorized cow slaughter a serious, non-bailable criminal offence punishable by imprisonment and substantial fines. Exceptions are made only for cows suffering from specified contagious or infectious diseases, subject to written certification from a designated competent authority and slaughter in prescribed designated areas. The law mandates the government to establish protective shelter houses for unproductive cows. It matters because it enforces state-wide animal welfare and cultural protections around cows while establishing strict legal penalties and regulatory oversight.
