The Sikkim Official Languages Act, 1977
1. Short title and extent
(1) This Act may be called the Sikkim Official Languages Act, 1977. (2) It extends to the whole of Sikkim. (3) It shall come into force on such date as the State Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint. (4) The Nepali, Bhutia, Lepcha and Limbu languages to be used for all or any of the official purposes of the State: Provided that different dates may be specified for different official purposes of the State.
2. Languages to be used for the official purposes of the State
The Nepali, the Bhutia, the Lepcha and the Limbu languages to be used for all the official purposes of the State of Sikkim: Provided that different dates may be specified for different official purposes of the State.
2A. English language to be used for transaction in the Legislative Assembly
Notwithstanding anything contained in section 2, the English language shall continue to be used for transaction of business in the Legislative Assembly of Sikkim in addition to the official languages of the State.
3. Power to make rules
(1) The State Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, make rules for carrying out the purposes of this Act. (2) All rules made under this section shall be laid as soon as may be after they are made, before the Legislative Assembly while it is in session, for a total period of thirty days which may be comprised in one session or in two or more successive sessions, and if, before the expiry of the session immediately following the session or the successive sessions aforesaid, the Legislative Assembly resolves to make any modification in the rules, or resolves that such rules or any portion thereof shall not have effect, the rules shall thereafter have effect only in such modified form or be of no effect, in whole or in part, as the case may be; so, however, that any such modification or annulment shall be without prejudice to the validity of anything previously done under such rules before such resolution.
