Infrastructure3 sections
The East Punjab Police (Protection of Railways) Act, 1947, enforces strict accountability and severe penalties for police personnel assigned to guard railway passengers and cargo within the Union territory of Chandigarh. It specifies that any police officer who fails to perform their duty to protect people or goods on railways from violent acts commits a serious criminal offense. Depending on the gravity of the failure, convicted officers face up to ten years of rigorous imprisonment. If their dereliction of duty results in the loss of human life, punishments can escalate to life imprisonment or the death penalty, overriding general police disciplinary rules.
