Bare Act
The Punjab Instruments (Control of Noises) Act, 1956
The Punjab Instruments (Control of Noises) Act, 1956 regulates loud and persistent sounds made through instruments like loudspeakers and amplifiers across the Indian states. This law applies to anyone using such equipment who needs permission from District Magistrates or authorized officers before making noise beyond certain limits. Specifically, users cannot operate instruments at night between 10 PM and 6 AM without written approval, nor can they create noise audible beyond their premises without authorization. Applications must include a court fee stamp worth approximately 7.50 rupees per day. Importantly, breaking these rules constitutes a cognizable offense meaning police can arrest offenders directly. Those who violate the Act may face up to six months in jail or pay fines up to 1,000 rupees, or both penalties.
