Bare Act
The Punjab Bhondedar, Butemar, Dohlidar, Insar Miadi, Mukarraridar, Mundhimar, Panahi Qadeem, Saunjidar, or Taraddadkar (Vesting of Proprietary Rights) Act, 2020
This legislation transfers full legal ownership of land in Punjab to long-term occupants recorded under traditional landholding categories, including Bhondedar, Dohlidar, Mukarraridar, and Saunjidar. It applies to individuals or their successors who have continuously occupied and cultivated such land for at least twenty years prior to the law coming into effect. By submitting an application and depositing prescribed compensation with the designated authority, eligible occupiers acquire clear, unencumbered land titles while original landowners' rights are extinguished. This law matters because it grants permanent property rights to long-standing customary landholders, securing their livelihoods, eliminating tenure insecurity, and modernizing state land records.
