The Puducherry Occupants of Kudiyiruppu (Conferment of Ownership) Act, 1973

General19733 sections

This Act regulates the ownership of homestead lands, called kudiyiruppu, in Puducherry, India. It applies to landless agriculturists and agricultural labourers who occupied these housing sites as tenants or licensees on or before March 27, 1972. By transferring ownership of these residential plots to the occupants entirely free of cost, the law prevents eviction and provides vital housing security to vulnerable rural families. It makes these newly acquired property rights heritable so they can be passed down to their heirs, but strictly prohibits owners from selling the land, ensuring that these protected families will permanently retain their own safe shelter.
