The Pondicherry (Extension of Laws) Act, 1968
The Pondicherry (Extension of Laws) Act, 1968, was enacted to integrate the Union Territory of Pondicherry (now Puducherry) into the broader legal framework of India. Following its merger, the territory operated under a distinct legal system that required harmonization with national laws. This Act extended a wide range of Central Indian statutes—such as the Indian Contract Act and the Transfer of Property Act—to the territory. It repealed conflicting local laws while ensuring that past legal actions remained valid. Essentially, it provided the legal mechanism to replace outdated local regulations with uniform national laws, ensuring legal consistency for citizens and businesses.
