The Puducherry Cultivating Tenants (Payment of Fair Rent) Act, 1970
The Puducherry Cultivating Tenants (Payment of Fair Rent) Act, 1970
This Act regulates the relationship between landowners and agricultural tenants in Puducherry by legally capping fair rent at between approximately thirty three and forty percent of crop yields. It applies to individuals who physically cultivate privately leased land but excludes government properties and temporary agreements. By establishing specialised Rent Courts to settle disputes and preventing landowners from demanding unpaid labor or extra fees, the law prevents exploitation. This legislation matters because it provides financial security to vulnerable cultivating tenant farmers, giving them the incentive to improve crop yields and invest in their fields, which ultimately strengthens the local agricultural economy.
