The Ganjam Small Holders Relief Act, 1947
The Ganjam Small Holders Relief Act, 1947 provides agricultural debt relief to tenant farmers in the Ganjam district of Odisha. It applies to smallholders holding up to six acres of wet land or twelve acres of other land who owe rent arrears to landholders. The law conditionally forgives older outstanding rent debts from earlier farming years provided the smallholders pay their current rent dues within specified deadlines. By offering partial or complete discharge of historical rent debts based on prompt recent payments, the legislation relieved struggling tenant farmers from overwhelming financial burdens while protecting landholders' rights to recover statutory cesses and court costs.
