The Maharashtra Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis Temporary Postponement of Elections Act, 2024
This Act temporarily postpones internal mid-term elections for key office bearers across Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis in Maharashtra due to the State Legislative Assembly elections in late 2024. It applies to incumbent Presidents, Vice-Presidents, and Subjects Committee Chairmen of Zilla Parishads, as well as Chairmen and Deputy Chairmen of Panchayat Samitis whose two-and-a-half-year tenures expired around October 2024. By extending the terms of sitting local leaders for up to ninety days, the law ensures rural local governance continues without leadership vacuums while state administrative machinery focuses on assembly elections. For ordinary citizens, it guarantees uninterrupted public services and valid decision-making in rural local bodies.
