Bare Act
The Maharashtra Village Panchayats (Temporary Further Postponement of Elections due to Elections to Maharashtra Legislative Assembly) Act, 1980
This 1980 Maharashtra Act was a temporary legislative measure designed to pause local governance elections to prioritize the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections. To prevent a vacuum in local administration, the Act mandated that no general or by-elections for Village Panchayats could be held until March 31, 1981. Crucially, it automatically extended the terms of all sitting Panchayat members and administrators, ensuring they remained in office until the next reconstituted body could meet. This ensured that essential village-level services continued without interruption during the state-level political transition, legally validating all official actions taken by these extended representatives during this period.
