Bare Act
The Land Acquisition (Maharashtra Extension and Amendment) Act, 1964
The Land Acquisition (Maharashtra Extension and Amendment) Act, 1964, was enacted to unify land acquisition laws across the newly formed state of Maharashtra. Before this Act, different regions—Bombay, Vidarbha, and Hyderabad—followed distinct legal frameworks for acquiring land for public purposes. This Act extended the central Land Acquisition Act, 1894, to the entire state, repealing conflicting regional laws. It also clarified technical definitions regarding "waste" and "arable" land to prevent legal challenges to past government land acquisitions. For citizens, it established a uniform legal standard for land acquisition procedures across the state, ensuring consistency in how the government acquires private property.
